Detailed Curatorial Notes
Provenance: Baron Anselm von Rothschild, Vienna, between 1866 and 1872 (cat no. 486), by inheritance to his son Baron Ferdinand Rothschild (d. 1898).
Commentary: The panel is likely to have been part of a casket. There is also a rectangular plaque with the same subject on blue ground on an old leather and wood box at the Musée Garinet at Chalons-en-Champagne (inv. no. 861-1-402) with the inscription TOUT PAR AMOR SUIS. Another, circular plaque of the same subject is in the Louvre (inv. no. OA 983), with the inscription MON AME [CO]NFIE. As this example is round it is perhaps an enseigne.
